Townscape and heritage appraisals offer a systematic and structured way of exploiting the unique historical features of an area. These appraisals help to give new developments character and a sense of place.
This report, published jointly by CABE and English Heritage in collaboration with Elevate East Lancashire, reflects the desire of both agencies to ensure a good process for addressing character and identity. It looks at the use of appraisals on the ground, focussing specifically on the experience of planning for regeneration in housing market renewal (HMR) areas in Pennine Lancashire. It shows that appraisals are not just about looking back but also about looking forward, helping to give new developments both character and a sense of place.
The report will be useful to professionals, elected members and others working in urban regeneration.
