Farming the Historic Landscape - An Introduction for Farm Advisors

By Steve Trow and Sarah Tunnicliffe et al (January 2005)
Published by English Heritage

If the historic character of our landscape is to be understood and enjoyed by current and future generations, it is vitally important that farmers and other land managers are encouraged and enabled to care for its historic places and sites.

This booklet is designed to offer an introduction to the historic environment for those engaged in providing environmental or business advice to farmers. It will also be of interest to many farmers, landowners and agents who wish to learn more about the history of the land they manage. It describes the process of change in the landscape, illustrates the range of historic features located on farmland and the legal framework that applies to them, and it directs the reader to more extensive sources of information. Above all, it demonstrates that the conservation of historic features and good agricultural practice need not conflict.
